Pamela Tippett

ARTIST BIOGRAPHY

Painter Pam Tippett studied at Studio Simi in Florence Italy between 1977 and 1980. Her realist still life paintings depict isolated domestic objects in staged interiors. Tippett has held solo exhibitions in Melbourne, Sydney and internationally in Italy and France.  She was awarded the Elizabeth Greenshields Study Grant in 1978 and the Coffs Harbour Eutick Memorial Still Life Award in 2010. Her work is held by several major Australian regional galleries.

Originally from Lismore and a Bachelor of Science graduate from Sydney University, Pam Tippett’s formal studies in drawing and painting were undertaken over three and a half years at Studio Simi in Florence where her training taught her ‘to see’ and gave her the skills and techniques admired in her paintings. She is perhaps best known for her beautifully and painstakingly executed still life works, however, she is equally proficient in portraiture and landscape.

A Goulburn local for around ten years and now still living in the region, Pam regularly exhibits at Australian Galleries Sydney and Melbourne, she was an Archibald finalist in 2004 and 2011, was the winner of the Eutick Memorial Still Life Award in 2010 and she has been a finalist several times in the Portia Geach Memorial Award. This exhibition will consist of mostly new and recent works in the still life genre but will include older works in a variety of genres as a survey of past years of her practice.

ARTIST'S REASON FOR PARTICIPATING

When Jess told me about this project I thought that this was a chance to to help, in a practical way, some of our fellow creatures who are in desperate circumstances due to human activities and greed. There are so many species which are endangered because of us, that it is easy to be overwhelmed by their plight. So I welcomed this as a way to spend time (metaphorically speaking) with an individual orangutan, Sinta, and her friend and hopefully contribute in some small way to their well-being and that of others of their kind.

The rescue Centre in Ketapang has been going through some quick changes in the 2011.They took in 11 new orangutans in one go, so a lot of preparation was needed to receive them and it is a bit busier now. All of the new animals have already had their thorough health check (under anaesthesia) and are settling in well in their new environment.

There are five youngsters called Pungky, Momo, Mimi, Prima and Pinoh. They are very lively and active, and have amazed us by already being able to open a huge coconut on their own.

The adults are Pingky, Suki, Neng, Cinta (all female) and Raja and Jimo (males). Raja is very strong and people passing by the cage have to keep a good eye on him as he does like grabbing your t-shirt to pull you closer to the cage. And then its a bit of a challenge to get him to let go!

A huge new enclosure has been prepared at the back of the transit Centre. The orangutans that were getting a bit too boisterous for the baby school have already been moved there (Bunga, Cindy, Melky). When the new youngsters have passed their quarantine period, they can get to know their new friends and make the most of their new home by swinging on the ropes and through the trees. It is not yet the forest environment that we have envisioned for them, but it is already a step in the right direction.

Lots of the orangutans have been moved about this month at the new Centre. Cinta was the first to go into one of the new large socialization cages. She can be quite destructive, but she is also easier to handle than a lot of the older girls, which makes her a good test case to see if the cages can stand up to the other strong and dextrous orangutans!. The girls are settling in to their new home and playing well together again.

Cinta and Mona are very good friend and cuddle up together quite often.
